ARFID: Picky Eater
April 2026 Project overview
A form of disordered eating, ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) has impacted my life daily since I was little. It differs from other weight, metrics and appearance-orientated eating disorders in that it doesn’t restrict because of any motives. Instead, it is a response to the eating environment, certain food groups, the feelings of safety around food, and apathy towards eating.
As with any disorder of any type it affects everyone in different ways, to different degrees. However, it is something that I wish I could have understood better when I was younger, and I know would have been better managed had the people around me been able to understand it too. So I decided to produce this zine, Picky Eater, to document some of my experiences and personal learnings, in the hope that this might resonate or be a useful tool for others.
The project consists of:
❋ Original Oil Pastel IllustrationsWe blend guided moments, open exploration, and space to reflect—so the experience feels both focused and fluid.
❋ ZineConnection is a core part of the process. You’ll learn just as much from the group as from the content itself.
❋ Paper sculptures of food❋ Links to support and useful resources'Recognising the difference between picky eating and ARFID transformed my relationship with food for the better.'
